When
I gave birth to my son, I was excited about being a new
mom. Luckily, I had been able to arrange a part-time
job that was going to allow me to work from home, and I
looked forward to spending time with my little boy.
However, before a year was up, disappointment,
loneliness, and frustration had set in big time. While
I still loved spending time with my son, our days alone
had grown too long. I had known a lot of people when I
worked outside the home, but now I had absolutely no
idea how to meet other moms. I’d take my son to the
park or mall where I’d see groups of moms chatting while
their kids played together. I’d hear them talking to
one another about playgroups, kids’ activities,
consignment sales, and other topics that both intrigued
and baffled me. A playgroup sounded like a good idea,
even though I wasn’t sure that I knew exactly what a
playgroup was, let alone how to get involved in one. I
continued to wonder how these moms met one another and
where they found information about the things they
discussed.
Looking for answers, I spent a lot of time searching the
Internet, Yellow Pages, and newspapers to find what
Omaha had to offer. Other moms I happened to meet gave
me some useful advice and information, and I must have
tried about every type of moms’ group and kids’ activity
around. Some weren’t right for me, but I finally found
a lot of great friends, activities, and resources that
have made being a mom much easier and happier.
My son is now five, and in the intervening years, I have
met so many other moms with stories similar to mine:
stories about not knowing how to connect with other
moms, stories of not being able to find fun and
productive activities for their kids, and stories of not
being able to locate community resources that make our
lives as moms easier and enable us to rise to the
challenges of parenting. We’ve often talked about how
much easier our early days as moms would have been if
only we’d known then what we know now, if only we’d had
access to all the information we had to gain the hard
way.
Sharing our stories with one another provided the
inspiration for creating a new community website -
